Callum Cheynowski can’t wait for Friday.
The 15-year-old Welland native is one of the top local prospects for the Ontario Hockey League draft and is eager to find out where he could potentially be playing next season.
“There is some nervousness thinking about where and when I’m going to go in the draft,” the Grade 10 student at Notre Dame said. “It is exciting because it’s just one time in your lifetime you get to experience it.”
Cheynowski, a solid, two-way defenceman who collected six goals and 13 points in 17 games with the Southern Tier Admirals U16 team this season, said he has been approached by several OHL organizations.
We are incredibly proud to announce that Arwen Arzadon is the 2022 ‘Catch the Spirit’ award recipient for Notre Dame. She will be honoured on May 4th with other recipients from Niagara Catholic. Congrats Arwen!

The ability to beat opposing defences with his feet and his arm made Marshall McCray an easy choice for the 2021 Jan Cook Award, which honours the top high school football player in Niagara.
The award, which recognizes individual and team success, capped an excellent season for the Notre Dame quarterback. The 17-year-old led his team to an undefeated season which included a Niagara Catholic Athletic Association crown, a Niagara Bowl, a Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association championship and a 50-7 thumping of the North Park Collegiate Trojans in the Central Bowl, part of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations bowl playdowns.

On Friday night, it was Adam Ponting who came to the rescue when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell behind 6-0 early to the Saint Michael Mustangs in the junior championship game of the BPSN Best of Niagara Boys Basketball Tournament at St. Catharines Collegiate.
The 13-year-old scored six straight points to tie the game and then he kept right on going, finishing with 24 to help the Irish record a hard-fought 63-58 victory in front of a packed gym.
