The Notre Dame Fighting Irish senior girls basketball team defended its Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association AAA title Thursday at Orchard Park with a 72-64 victory over the host school.

“The girls played with a lot of effort to focus on team play. We will have to continue to work hard to get better,” Notre Dame coach Loris Lucchetta said. “They are learning to deal with pressure situations and being responsible with their possessions of the ball. We have improved in our consistency in effort on the court.”

Notre Dame was able to set the tone in the championship game with its relentless defence that allowed it to shut down many of Orchard Park’s top scorers while forcing turnovers at crucial moments. The defensive pressure disrupted Orchard Park’s rhythm and created fast-break opportunities that helped the Irish control the pace.
