
Calem Smith made the most of a rare opportunity to start in the backfield for the North Dame Fighting Irish Thursday.
Subbing for the injured Everett Hemauer, Smith rushed for a touchdown and was a constant presence of offence as the Irish defeated the Saint Michael Mustangs 27-8 in the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior boys football opener for both teams at St. Mike’s.
“Well, it’s amazing for me,” said Smith, a 17-year-old, Grade 12 student. “I’ve been working to start my whole life because our starting running back just went out. I started my junior years, but up coming to senior, I didn’t get to play running back my first year. So it feels really good to get back in my senior year.
“It’s just a great feeling.”
