ND alum Canada’s Ambassador to the UN

Congratulations to the Hon. David Lametti, a graduate of Notre Dame College School, who was recently named as Ambassador and Permanent Resident of Canada to the United Nations (unofficially known as the Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations) by Prime Minister Mark Carney.  

 

Following his graduation from Notre Dame College, Ambassador-designate Lametti earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and economics the University of Toronto, then attended McGill University, where he received his Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Civil Laws degrees in 1989.  

 

Ambassador-designate Lametti completed a Master of Laws degree from Yale University in 1991 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in law at Exeter College at Oxford University in 1999. While at Oxford, Ambassador-designate Lametti co-captained the school’s hockey team with fellow Canadian Oxford scholar, Prime Minister Carney.  

 

He is a legal scholar, former parliamentarian, and now, diplomat. From the Prime Minister’s Office’s announcement of Ambassador-designate Lametti’s appointment: 

Prior to his career in politics, Mr. Lametti taught at McGill University’s Faculty of Law, where he served as Associate Dean from 2008 to 2011, was a founding member of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and served as its Director from 2009 to 2012. Earlier in his career, he also served as Law Clerk for Canadian Supreme Court Justice Peter Cory. 

Internationally recognized for his expertise in intellectual property and property law, Mr. Lametti is the author of numerous publications. In addition to his tenured teaching position, he has delivered lectures around the world in French, English, and Italian at several prestigious universities. 

 

That year, Ambassador-designate Lametti was elected Member of Parliament for LaSalle-Émard-Verdun in 2015. In 2019, he was appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, serving in that role until 2023.  

 

After leaving politics in 2024, Ambassador-designate Lametti joined law firm Fasken Martineau DuMoulin, specializing in Indigenous Law. In June, he was selected by Prime Minister Carney to be his Principal Secretary.  

 

Ambassador-designate Lametti will begin his appointment at the United Nations on November 15.
